Disability Programme Report Launched

3 February 2006

A summary report on Count Us In City Parochial Foundations Disability Programme which ran from 2000 to 2005 - was launched today at Glaziers Hall, London Bridge, by authors Sioned Churchill of CPF and Manghanita Kempadoo, Consultant to the programme.

The authors reported that the aim of this special programme was to look at the lack of support for small disability groups and self-advocacy groups of people with learning disabilities in London. A very important part of the work was to look at the needs of black and minority ethnic disabled people and other disadvantaged groups and to develop ways in which their long term needs could be met.

Count Us In did not always run smoothly groups involved had very different ways of working and these had to be accommodated. It meant changes in approaches at times, and called for great understanding, perhaps more so than in other areas.

But overall, significant progress was made. Individuals and groups gained in confidence and made a significant contribution towards amending the Mental Capacity Bill, to ensure that it really did meet the needs of people who are disabled and from black and minority ethnic groups.
